IHOP Buys Applebees

The story is that IHOP has been looking for an opportunity like this for some time. It is interesting to note that Applebee’s is much bigger than IHOP. The reason that it was an attractive financial move was that IHOP runs its business almost completely through franchising while Applebee’s still owns and operates about 75% of its eateries. IHOP has plans to shift much of Applebee’s over to a franchise model. This will improve the financial picture in both short and longterm ways.

Since I have a lot of traffic from people with an interest in dieting, I will also mention that IHOP puts pancake batter in their omelets. That will be old news to most of my current readers. It might be news to some people that Applebee’s has a relationship with Weight Watchers and that they have several Weight Watchers menu items.
