Just Because You Can
Just because you can access a file on the Internet, that doesn’t mean that it is ok to take it. I have to confess that, before YouTube, I used to use this a very big url like this to find music and video files. Some of these files were on unprotected indices.
I just read a story about AP finding documents that the US military refused to share waiting for them on the Internet. Someone who was careless or lacking in knowledge used an unsecure file transfer protocol to move the file between departments or to and from contractors. I am choosing to be vague and I am choosing not to link to the story. To the best of my knowledge, the Associated Press has been responsible with the information and complied with DOD requests related to the files.
If the US Military has lapses in its protection of private information, you can be almost sure that you or somebody that you have entrusted with your information is also vulnerable.
