Democracy 101
One day before history was made with the election of a black man as President of the United States of America…
-
Five white school board members voted against changing the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School.
Two black school board members voted for the change.
Nathan Bedford Forrest is thought to have been a founder of the KKK. He is suspected to have ordered a massacre of black soldiers during a civil war battle. The majority of the students at Nathan Bedford Forrest High School are black.
Media attention might be enough to have the board reconsider. I think a more effective form of action would be for a few more black individuals to get themselves elected to the board. There are plenty of really good dead people to name stuff after. I happened to be walking along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue last weekend, in Tunis.
