The man in the centre is most probably who George W. Bush is picking as the new Head of the World Bank. Hopefully the dollar won’t drop to a new low of Tuppence a Bag.

His name is Robert Zoellick. He is qualified for the position. The other people in the picture are actors. They were never even shortlisted for the position.

When Tax Shelters Cave In

Friday, May 18th, 2007

In Switzerland wealthy foreign residents who do not have any local earnings can negotiate a special annual tax fee that is based on their expenditure. This has been providing people like Shania Twain a lucrative discount compared to the income tax that they would pay in their home country.

The Swiss municipal governments may be in the process of deciding that this is too good to last. I can only assume that the slow process of deciding on a change is because they have to figure out how to squeeze some golden eggs out of these rich people with out squeezing too hard.

Obsolete Currency

saddam-bill.JPGThis is an image of a 1993 bill with the image of Saddam Hussein. These are no longer legal tender.

In 2003 Iraqis were given the chance to trade them at an exchange rate of 1.00. For obvious reasons, some of these were held on to by collectors.

I am curious about whether the various European moneys that get decommissioned when a country adopts the Euro retains much value for collectors.

Dealing With Limits

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

I like throwing out little history factoids to see what kind of parallel can be drawn with modern life.

Mocha-Java is a name applied to various coffee blends and coffee drinks. The origin of the delicious blend of coffee is limited choice. Britain was crazy about coffee in the 1700’s and for a good portion of that era they were at war with various other empires and they only had access to a limited number of foreign ports. The only reliable sources of coffee were Mokka (Yemen) and Java.

The coffee resulting from blending the two coffees is better and more complex than the individual varieties. I used to import Fair Trade coffee from Sumatra and Ethiopia for the roastery. We used those to make our version of Mocha Java. Choices aren’t as limited anymore.
