An Aside about Kimkins

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

Google Trends is a tool from Google that has not really caught on. I guess the disclaimers about accuracy might have something to do with that. Nevertheless, when I was researching something entirely unrelated, I got the idea to see what the Trends Graph for Kimkins looked like.

Take a moment to picture what you think it might look like before you click the link.

What I Learned Today: Orphaned Pages

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

There is a weird feeling that I get whenever I get a glimpse of just how much I DON’T know about internet marketing and SEO. Reading a Technology Blog is generally stressful for me.

The blog over at DatabanqMedia.com has an interesting post about the pitfalls of orphaned pages. Until a few minutes ago, I had never heard of orphaned pages. Now I am worried that I probably have them. An orphan page is one that has no inbound links as a result of some restructuring of your site.

David Bayer is President of DataBanq Media and in this post he uses several diagrams and analogies to explain how orphaned pages can affect your Google rank.

Nationwide Wireless in the USA

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

The wireless frequencies that are being abandoned as television goes digital is to be auctioned off by late January of 2008. Right now there is a tense three pistols thing going on between Google, AT&T and the FCC. The FCC is, of course, the sheriff of analogy town. Google and AT&T are both asking for provisions. If Google gets the exact licensing requirements that it asking for, it has pledged to bid over four BILLION dollars for the airwaves.

YouTube Set to Make a Huge Change

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Somehow, Google is going to put in place a mechanism that will prevent YouTube users from uploading copyrighted material. The old system involved telling users that they are not allowed to do this and then removing videos in response to complaints. This was not good enough for several media conglomerates.

One thing I do not understand is how this will affect typical fair use items. I suspect that fair use will not be an option anymore.

Upon further reading, I just saw that the technology will actually not prevent the upload, but rather, it will recognize and remove a violating video within one minute.

Google Shortens the Shelf Life for C00kies

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

cookies.JPGI used to have a blog that was hosted on a d-list celebrity’s website. Actually, I still have one there, but he has recently installed word press. The reason I bring that up is because on his old blogging setup, I couldn’t put the word cookies into the text of a blog entry. I thought that was odd, but in retrospect there were probably good reasons for it. I was actually writing something about Oreo Cookies. I had to resort to using zeros like some leet kid. Some people are worried about cookies.

Google just announced in the official Google blog that they are going to make a change that causes cookies to expire in a shorter time. The change is a move being made in response to users feedback and the advice of privacy advocates.

The original expiry date for cookies from Google was 2038.

Why Buy The Cow?

cows.JPGThe government of the United States of America has a wealth of images, including photographs, maps, flags, line drawings and paintings. They are all public domain. Some images should be credited.

NASA is a great source for some very evocative images. CIA fact sheets are a great source of information.

I should add that you are not allowed free use of photographs showing the faces of government employees.

How to Spread the Truth About the Kimkins Diet Controversy

Friday, July 13th, 2007

A quick Google search for Kimkins, Kimkins diet, or Kimkins weight loss is all it takes to see how pervasive the Kimkins.com marketing machine is. It’s hard for low carb newbies and other dieters to make an informed decision if they don’t know about the raging controversy surrounding Kimkins and its elusive self-appointed guru, Kimmer.

You can help change this! Here are some things you can do to make sure that Internet searchers get to read more than just promotional affiliate advertising about the Kimkins diet:

  1. Using the phrases Kimkins, Kimkins diet or Kimkins weight loss, link from your own websites and blogs, as well as message boards or other social websites, to URLs that contain information about the controversy such as:

Anybody can do this, whether you have a website of your own or not.

Kimkins has had excellent affiliate marketing and search engine optimization, and only an organized effort will help get the word out that everything may not be what it seems at Kimkins.com. Every link and bookmark counts!

Reactions to Sicko

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Michael Moore’s movie Sicko is going to get a rough ride in the mainstream media for the simple reason that the media depends on advertising dollars for its survival. Here is an article discussing the dependency that newspapers have on drug money. Complicated issues, just like drugs, have a shelf life. The article is from 2004.

Here’s something fresh and potent… Google is Pro-Big Drug Company and Anti-Michael Moore. I have heard that their business model is somehow related to advertising as well. In their defense they try not to be evil. I am reminded of Bart’s famous “I can’t promise that I’ll try. But I’ll try to try” line.

Is Google Updating Page Rankings Right Now?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

I passed along some misinformation a while back regarding Google PR updates. This time, I will only say that people are talking in the Blogosphere about the possibility that it is going on right now. I am crossing my fingers. That is not my entire SEO strategy, but it is an integral part of it.

The Tickle Me iPhone

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Nobody is going to read my blog today unless I am talking about the iPhone. Just about every blogger on the planet will be posting about the iPhone, so my comments will be lost in an ocean of commentary. Ironically, I have just arrived at the point of not caring anymore about the iPhone.

I’m sure it is very nice.
