Working Out is Awesome

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

We are going to the gym 5 mornings a week. I have to confess that I am the reluctant one most of the time, but I am really feeling much better. I rarely get that dragged out feeling during the workday.

Exercising in the morning before starting a day’s work is something that I would highly recommend. I did a quick web search to see if people agree with me and it is a bit of a mixed bag. I saw a few people on boards saying that they can’t exercise on an empty stomach. When I lived on my parents’ farm, I used to have a cup of tea and an apple before the morning chores (I did a good 45 minutes of shoveling and pushing cows around). The real breakfast came after chores; grapefruit, oatmeal and a soft-boiled egg.

Lipotropic Injections: Weighing the Risks

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Observant readers of my blog probably noticed that I was riding the PayPerPost bubble for the last year. It seems that the gravy boat has sailed as far as paid reviews go. I am still checking out the marketplace and on rare occasions making posts for truly compelling websites, but not nearly as often.

Today I am biting the hand that feeds me a little bit by panning a weight loss procedure that an advertiser is promoting on SocialSpark.

My gut reaction to online sales of Lipotropic Injections was very negative. When I went to check it out on Google, I saw that the Internet is littered with people selling this stuff. That is why the advertiser is looking for outside the box SEO strategies, he wants to be on top of the heap.

I had to dig pretty deep to find any non-shilling info. All that needs to be said is that there is no conclusive data suggesting that these injections are effective and that self injection without prior in person instruction from a healthcare professional is a very BAD idea.

I should mention that, as of now, no bloggers who are part of SocialSpark have written a paid review for the Lipotropic Injections selling site.

ShrinkYourself.com

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Take a few moments to check out the information at www.ShrinkYourself.com and then think for yourself.

There is a picture of a lady in red on the website. She is Michelle Fiordaliso, the Clinical Director of ShrinkYourself.com. She lost 40 pounds and she hosts the Shrink Yourself blog. Tackling emotional eating is often a prerequisite to following weight loss plans. This site makes it the primary goal. This makes a lot of sense to me. A lot of overweight people eat as a response to a number of emotional triggers. Ideally, we should only eat when we are hungry.

There is an online program, a book and also a community. The forum is free to join and it is moderately active.

Review of FoodConnect.com

Monday, February 25th, 2008

FoodConnect.com looks like an excellent resource for people regardless of what way of eating they choose. Users can submit their recipes to www.foodconnect.com and nutritional information is generated by the site. The accuracy of this information may not always be precisely accurate, but I think it would be a great guide when you are looking for new recipes to fit into your life.

If you are looking for unhealthy food, try the recipe that someone came up with when they tried to replicate their favorite rib recipe from a restaurant that closed in Hawaii. One serving has 104% of your daily recommended sodium and 84% of the fat that you should have in a day. There are recipes with goat cheese and dates that are a lot healthier.

I like the rating system. There is a sidebar table of the highest rated recipes for each category. That’s how I found the rib recipe. It must be really good. I might try it with a reduction in the salt.

Mississippi Debates A Law Against Feeding Fat People

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Mississippi has more than its share of obese people. One politician is raising awareness of the problem by making an indecent proposal to enact a law that would force restaurant owners to refuse to serve the obese.

His colleagues aren’t happy about the bill and there has never been any chance of it passing.

There are analogous situations. Bar owners in many areas cannot serve patrons alcohol if they are intoxicated. Obviously that law is ignored to some extent. Drinkers would not be able to make an accusation of discrimination in the same way that obese people could if Mississippi actually tried to play nanny state in such a ridiculous fashion.

A Guide to Weight Loss

Friday, January 25th, 2008

January is traditionally a time when there is a huge increase in the number of people searching for online weight loss strategies. If you are looking for a good place to start your search for a diet, you might consider looking at www.weight-loss-diet-help.com. This site features reviews and coupons for Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, South Beach Diet, Jillian Michaels, eDiets.com, Medifast and Diet To Go.

If you want to have any hope of living up to your weight loss resolution, you need to find a diet that fits well with your lifestyle. If you are already big on convenience foods, you might prefer a diet like Nutrisystem that allows you to order a bunch of portion controlled calorie reduced meals online. Weight Watchers also sells convenient meals. I don’t know which ones taste better. I do know that there is a 25% off Weight Watchers Online coupon offer that expires at the end of this month. There are some freebies related to Nutrisystem that you can get through Weight Loss Diet Help.

I have never dieted with weight loss in mind. I was almost sort of eating Atkins when Catherine was following it. The occasional muffin eaten at work kinda disqualifies me (ok, I ate lots of carbs outside the house). She is a great cook and enjoys putting together a great meal, so a diet like Atkins that doesn’t restrict you to specially packaged diet meals was a much better fit. The doctor’s book was the only purchase made from Atkins.

“The News Is What WE Say It Is”

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

This needs to be seen.

I am posting this because of it’s implications about how big business is in control of how news is reported. I don’t want to be alarmist about the story that FOX killed at the behest of Monsanto. I have a degree in agriculture and I was part of a big discussion about the use of hormone injections in the dairy industry in one of my classes. My professor was very much in favor of the practice. This was during the period of time in which it was unclear which way the Canadian government agency was going to swing on this issue. The use of low levels of antibiotics in feed for animals that are raised for meat production is, in my mind, a much greater human risk and it is a practice that is widespread.

Canada prohibits the use of rbST because of its adverse health effects on cows, not humans.

Expert Laparoscopy

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

The only adjustable and completely reversible weight-loss surgery available in the United States today is the LAP-BAND System. Diets and exercise are, of course, also adjustable and completely reversible weight-loss strategies. They get adjusted and reversed despite our best intentions. For a large segment of the population, the risks that are associated with their extra weight outweigh the risks associated with laparoscopic procedures.

Richard Collier is an very experienced laparoscopic surgeon and he performs the LAP-BAND procedure at his clinics in Texas. Here are the locations where he performs lapband houston, Conroe, Kingwood and The Woodlands. The surgical clinics are designed to comfortable accommodate morbidly obese patients.

The LAP-BAND ® Option

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Modern lap-band surgery typically utilizes laparoscopic techniques and a state of the art patented banding device. While it is still an invasive procedure with all the risks associated with any abdominal surgery, JourneyLite’s lap band surgical facilities specialize in the safest weight-loss surgery available today.

LAP-BAND ® has been an option for so long that most people have an idea about how it works. JourneyLite has a great video that goes into detail. It is not gross, it is computer animation. Deciding for or against surgery requires drawing a sort of health balance sheet. Obesity has associated health risks. Surgery has health risks, but is generally more effective than dieting and, in extreme cases, could be considered life-saving.

What is With the Haters?

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Fat acceptance advocates’ positions have sparked criticism and mockery.

This is a very accurate statement in the Wikipedia entry for fat acceptance movement. I recently approved a comment on this blog that was hateful and derogatory towards fat people. I don’t approve of the comment, but I had said from the outset that I was going to publish all comments that were relevant to the Kimkins controversy. The comment made me curious about the two extremes of fat acceptance and fat hatred. When I went to the Wikipedia article for the Fat Acceptance Movement, it was immediately obvious that it had been vandalized.

You can see a screenshot HERE. There is some obscene language.
