Red Wine Still Favored By Health Researchers.

Monday, October 15th, 2007

I started drinking a small amount of wine on a daily basis after research suggested that it had benefits with regard to blood cholesterol. I have a family history that suggests that I be wary of my cholesterol.

Now there are studies that suggest additional benefits. Salmonella and listeria and h-pylori are all inhibited by the phytochemicals in red wine. H-pylori is the bacteria that causes most stomach ulcers.

If you do not drink alcohol, you can get many of the same benefits from dark grape juice.

Exercise is Good For Us

Monday, September 24th, 2007

I learned two things about the relationship between exercise and body fat. The first thing I learned is that the report that medical scientists write for each other are way too complicated to for me to fully grasp much less paraphrase in a blog post.

Luckily I was able to learn something worthwhile from a press release crafted by the same scientists.

Studies are showing that when people eat a high fat meal and then exercise, fats get oxidized and broken down into healthier molecules. This happens in the skeletal muscle tissue. The press release is actually pretty good reading.

Rethinking Consumer Habits

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

There are probably thousands of examples that I could use for the point that I am going to try to make in this post. For no particular reason, I have decided to use Cat Food as the example. The demand for cat food existed for thousands of years before an industry came into existence to meet that demand with cheaply produced conveniently packaged and well marketed products.

Wait a second, what did people do to feed their cats before there was a pet food industry?

I think the answer is that they did basically the same thing that the industry does, except without the marketing and the packaging. Pet food is formulated to be nutritious, but at the lowest possible cost. Byproducts of the industries that feed humans are often used and also as as much cheap grain based filler as cats will tolerate. I grew up on a farm that often had a double digit cat population. We went through quite a bit of commercial cat food but we also fed the cats much of the oil and grease related to cooking for people. We would simply add some water to a greasy pan that had been used to cook some meat or fish, bring the mixture to a low boil and add oatmeal and/or cornmeal.

The scandalous adulteration of wheat gluten with melamine that occurred in China is not all that surprising to me. I took a course in applied animal nutrition in college and I remember the complicated calculations used to get a food that met the maintenance and growth requirements for an animal at the lowest cost. This melamine has NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE, but the nitrogen content in the chemical can make it appear that the wheat gluten has a higher protein content. This alteration makes the wheat gluten more valuable on the market.

What happened with China was bound to happen because the Western World was exporting the pressure to minimize costs, but has no way of exporting regulation and oversight. Adulteration like this was widespread in North America before federal regulations and federal resources were directed at the situation.

I’m a bit off track with this post. The main point that I wanted to make is that consumers can have a small pet food industry in their own home so they don’t have to put their trust in the multinational industry that created the Chinese pet food scandal. I was inspired to write this post after seeing a page of recipes for cat meals.

The broader point is that just about every ‘industry’ can potentially be abandoned wholesale by consumers if the situation warrants it.

Get the Lead Out

Friday, September 21st, 2007

The most recent news about lead contaminated products imported from China has a new twist. The products were promotional items that government organization gave to people. The canvas lunch boxes were meant to promote healthy eating.

The ‘buyer beware’ edict tends to go out the window when you are getting something for free.

If anybody is nice enough to give you one of those giant foam pointy fingers, don’t give it to your kids to play with.

I hope agencies are testing balloons and party favors as well.

Fast Drug Detox

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

If an addiction to opiates is impacting your life, rapid detox may be a great way to get back on track.

I just did a little bit of research starting at Opiates.com. This site is designed to get the word out about the Waismann Method, which is an accelerated drug detox method that is performed under the supervision of a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist.

I did a search on the method, and I was impressed by it. It makes sense to induce the most serious withdrawal symptoms while an addict is in the hospital. With this method, physical withdrawal can start in a matter of a few hours rather than after days with other detox methods.
Patients are unconscious during most of the initial process. Medicines that remove opiates from receptors are used. This is a complex procedure and patients have to undergo tests beforehand.

I was left wondering why all the high profile celebrity addicts do not opt for this method. I am suspicious that they like to be able to claim that they entered a Malibu type rehab because of exhaustion, or pressure from their management and that they weren’t really addicted. Yeah, right.

Skin Care for AMO Skin

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Typical skin care products are formulated to suit one or more of these categories; dry, normal, combination and oily.

That makes a lot of sense. Until you look around you and realize that the human population has much more widely varied skin types. Remember back in 1962 when Crayola changed the name of one of their crayons from Flesh to Peach? Me neither, I wasn’t even born. My grandmother still had some Flesh crayons at her house, though.

The skin type I am going to touch on in this post is referred to by skin care professionals as AMO. This is short for Asian, Mediterranean and other Olive. This skin type has special needs. I didn’t know until just now that some blemish treatments that were not formulated for this skin type can actually make things worse.

ORIKI Cosmeceuticals have been specially developed for this type of pigmentation by an American Board Certified Dermatologist and Biochemist. Many products in the ORIKI line are used to lighten dark blemishes and scarring with natural ingredients like vitamin C and licorice extract.

This skin cleanser possesses a unique blend of cleansing agents and powerful botanical antioxidants.

A Guide to Healthcare Schools

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Healthcare is very labor intensive. There will never be a self serve hospital.

Healthcare jobs can be very specialized and the job market fluctuates and changes with relation to what specialties are in demand. GuideToHealthcareSchools.com appears to be a great resource both for people who hope to enter the workforce and for people who are already in healthcare and want to adapt to change or increase their earning power. A healthcare management degree seems like a great step for people with skills and experience in healthcare.

GuideToHealthcareSchools.com is a well designed and very searchable site that has links to some well respected schools. The emphasis is on degree programs in medicine and dentistry. I like the fact that when you search based on specialty and state, you get the in state, on site schools first followed by any available online courses.

LAP-BAND: A Major Decision

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

LAP-BAND® is a surgical device. It’s sole purpose is weight loss. In my opinion, surgery poses risks that far exceed the risks of non-surgical steps related to diet and exercise. Tragically, many people simply cannot find a way to succeed with any nonsurgical means. The risks of LAP-BAND® surgery are often less dangerous than the risks posed by continued obesity.

JourneyLite.com is a website promoting weight loss surgery. They have surgeons located in California, Texas and Florida. There are free seminars offered in these states. The site is very extensive with message boards, a Q and A section operated by a qualified nurse, Jamie J. Carr.

Someone with whom I am very close was on a waiting list for surgery at one point. The wait for elective surgery is very long in Canada. This person ended up dropping below the weight that qualified her as a candidate for the surgery with public health care. I had supported the decision to pursue the surgery, but I was relieved when it was no longer imminent as well.

Using Dogs to Detect Mold

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

dog.JPGThis is Hunter. He helps people who who are involved in mold removal near New Jersey. Several dogs around the country have been trained to detect mold. This detection method is cheap reliable and best of all immediate.

Another important advantage of mold testing with dogs is the way they can pinpoint the problem area. Lab testing your indoor air for spores will not pinpoint the problem.

Drug Rehab Malibu

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Reading about the typical Drug Rehab Malibu based facilities provide sometimes makes me feel jealous of the drug addicts. Chefs, massage therapists and other professionals seem to be there to treat the patients to the good life. When I undertook the task of reviewing Cliffside Malibu, I decided to do some research and find something unique and interesting about the place.

What I found were horses. I read in a medical RSS feed that equine therapy can be very beneficial because a recovering addict can experience a cooperative relarionship with another being that is not judgmental. Family members, friends and health care professionals are all aware to some degree of a patient’s history. Attempts at dialogue are always affected by real and perceived negative emotions. A horse can be an effective facilitator.

Many of the testimonials on CliffsideMalibu.com mention the equine program with great fondness. It is an interest that can easily be continued after Rehab. From what have experienced with addicts that I have been close to in my life, you pretty much have to get a new group of aquaintances after your initial recovery. You also have to find new things to take up your spare time. I recommend blogging.

I think Britney Spears should go into seclusion somewhere and do nothing but blog and spend quality time with her family. I think her failure is in large part due to an addiction to the social constructs that she buys into.
