LAP-BAND: A Major Decision

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

LAP-BAND® is a surgical device. It’s sole purpose is weight loss. In my opinion, surgery poses risks that far exceed the risks of non-surgical steps related to diet and exercise. Tragically, many people simply cannot find a way to succeed with any nonsurgical means. The risks of LAP-BAND® surgery are often less dangerous than the risks posed by continued obesity.

JourneyLite.com is a website promoting weight loss surgery. They have surgeons located in California, Texas and Florida. There are free seminars offered in these states. The site is very extensive with message boards, a Q and A section operated by a qualified nurse, Jamie J. Carr.

Someone with whom I am very close was on a waiting list for surgery at one point. The wait for elective surgery is very long in Canada. This person ended up dropping below the weight that qualified her as a candidate for the surgery with public health care. I had supported the decision to pursue the surgery, but I was relieved when it was no longer imminent as well.

Using Dogs to Detect Mold

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

dog.JPGThis is Hunter. He helps people who who are involved in mold removal near New Jersey. Several dogs around the country have been trained to detect mold. This detection method is cheap reliable and best of all immediate.

Another important advantage of mold testing with dogs is the way they can pinpoint the problem area. Lab testing your indoor air for spores will not pinpoint the problem.

Drug Rehab Malibu

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Reading about the typical Drug Rehab Malibu based facilities provide sometimes makes me feel jealous of the drug addicts. Chefs, massage therapists and other professionals seem to be there to treat the patients to the good life. When I undertook the task of reviewing Cliffside Malibu, I decided to do some research and find something unique and interesting about the place.

What I found were horses. I read in a medical RSS feed that equine therapy can be very beneficial because a recovering addict can experience a cooperative relarionship with another being that is not judgmental. Family members, friends and health care professionals are all aware to some degree of a patient’s history. Attempts at dialogue are always affected by real and perceived negative emotions. A horse can be an effective facilitator.

Many of the testimonials on CliffsideMalibu.com mention the equine program with great fondness. It is an interest that can easily be continued after Rehab. From what have experienced with addicts that I have been close to in my life, you pretty much have to get a new group of aquaintances after your initial recovery. You also have to find new things to take up your spare time. I recommend blogging.

I think Britney Spears should go into seclusion somewhere and do nothing but blog and spend quality time with her family. I think her failure is in large part due to an addiction to the social constructs that she buys into.

Cosmetic Surgery Advice

Friday, August 24th, 2007

As far as I am Cosmetic Surgery Advice is only valuable if it comes from an experienced professional. Obviously there is some point in listening to people who have experienced cosmetic surgery themselves, but they will inevitably be very emotional about it. Here is a link to a video interview of three women who have had breast augmentation.

The free cosmetic surgery advice that you can get from the expert surgeons at MYA.co.uk appears to be responsible and well informed. As with any major decision that you make about your health and your body, you should seek information and advice from a variety of sources.

Full Spectrum Lighting Fools Your Brain

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Most of us don’t have a clinical diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder, but I think full spectrum lighting can benefit the health of most office dwellers.

Having the full spectrum of light from a lamp entering your retinas affects your brain chemistry the same as sitting out in the natural sunlight. A full spectrum desk lamp could make you more productive and happier, especially in the winter. I remember having a work shift in Canada where I was going to and from work in the dark at missing out on the whole 9 hours of sunlight.

ShopPremier.com is a huge online store that features the best quality in lighting solutions inside and outside.

Carbon Monoxide Injected Meat Losing Approval

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Consumers equate red meat with freshness. I took a course in college related to meat products and I learned about the common practice of removing ground meat from the shelves and running it through the grinder again before repackaging it and placing it back on the retail shelf. This is done for no other reason than to make the product look more appealing. The surface of the portion of meat will appear more red.

This is a low tech retail level trick of the trade. The USDA and the FDA don’t really involve themselves in this issue. various departments of health occasionally have to deal with food borne illnesses that are related to ground meat.

At the packaging and wholesaling level of the meat industry, there is an FDA sanctioned practice of adding carbon monoxide to packaged meats. This has the effect of extending the length of time that the meat will stay bright red. Carbon Monoxide from vehicle exhaust systems and home heating systems is a common cause of accidental deaths and suicides.

Adding CO to a package of meat does not pose any health risk on its own. The problem arises from the fact that meat that has not been kept under proper refridgerated conditions will mantain an appearance of freshness even though spoilage has taken place. Many smaller retailers have refused to sell meats that are packaged in this way. These stores have generally been serving a health conscious niche of consumers. Safeways recent decision to stop selling CO injected meat might be the beginning of the end for the practice.

Be Proactive about Acne

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

I have three teenage children. They have acne of an almost identical severity. They have a broad range of attitudes about their acne.

One kid is painfully self conscious. One kid could care less, or is effectively pretending to not care. The third lies somewhere between. About three months ago, we as parents decided that they should be given a treatment program and some instruction as to how to go about implementing it. We chose a product with Benzoyl Peroxide. This ingredient is safe for children to use and it can be very effective in treating mild cases of acne. Thankfully, their cases are mild.

Treatment programs like proactive solution combine several products and a precise regimen of skincare which should, in most cases, minimize acne. Benzoyl Peroxide is a key ingredient in Proactive Solution

I keep kidding myself that fresh air and sunshine can do wonders for acne. I should know better after reading all the scientific facts about the problem. The bacteria that cause acne outbreaks are actually thriving in an anerobic environment inside clogged pores. The reason that we get more acne in our teens is that hormones cause our sebacious glands to excrete more oils. These mix with dead skin cells to form clogs in our pores (blackheads). Dirt doesn’t really have much of a role here. Washing is helpful because it removes oil and dead cells. Proactive solution packages includes a cleanser as the first of three steps. The second step is a toner that works to unplug pores. The last step has prescription strength Benzoyl Peroxide.

The celebrity endorser for Proactive Solution is Jessica Simpson. The catch with having a celebrity endorse an acne product is that a portion of the public will be disbelieving as far as the celebrity having to deal with problem skin. I have spent some time writing blogs about celebrities and I have seen lots of pictures. Jessica Simpson has a skin type that can be problematic.

Bye Bye BMI

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

The Body Mass Index has been a widely used calculation both in healthcare and in scientific studies related to obesity. Recently published studies have put the measurement into disrepute and many professionals have already begun to reduce their reliance on the number as a definitive factor.

I think it is still a useful tool for hands on management of human health. The basic shortcoming of the statistical tool is that it does not differentiate between body fat and lean muscle mass.

Most people who on a weight loss program, regardless of how regimented or casual it is, are measuring their weight. Ideally they should measure it every day. The other input for BMI is height, which doesn’t change much from day to day in an adult human.

I think BMI can be useful for setting a realistic goal at the beginning of a weightloss program.

Today’s Header Color…not lovin’ it

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

mcheader.JPG

So my header today is as close as I could get to the colors commonly used for packaging and promotions for McDonald’s.

I had a quick look at their site and I noticed that they include a couple of pages from qualified experts on health and diet. Dean Ornish is one of these experts. These pages are essentially a platform for the promotion of good diet and health. They do not endorse any particular McDonald’s product. They do not promote the restaurant in any way and seem to have very sound facts and advice.
